Canadian Rockies Golf veteran superintendent Robin Sadler of Silvertip Golf Resort dishes on 18 years at the same course, a new Short Course and Bill Murray
1. You have been at Silvertip Golf Resort since before construction on the course began. What has it been like to watch the course mature over the last 18 years?
It has been the best experience of my career. The transition from a new course to a mature one has provided its challenges. The course consistently tells us what to do. Providing a high end product on one of the hardest sites to grow turf in the world keeps you on your toes. There are many challenges, but there is nothing better than being able to overcome them and those same challenges add to the enjoyment of growing turf out here.
2. What made you decide to become a superintendent?
I started working in turf as summer job when I was 15. Four years later I was driving down the fairway watching the sun rise. This is where I realized the sights, sounds, smells and work on the course were amazing. Right then and there it came to me that I loved the profession and started pursuing it as a career.
3. You played a major role in the creation of the recently introduced Short Course at Silvertip Golf Resort. Please tell us more about this new feature.
Growing the game of golf, playability and fun on the golf course is something we all believe in at Silvertip. Last year we built a par-58 short course within Silvertip. Essentially we built another set of forward tees for children and adults. It was important to keep the integrity of the course while creating great golf holes from the new set of tees. We are very happy with how it turned out and continue to encourage everyone to out and play it whether they are a beginner to and experienced golfer. Fun can be had by all.
4. What is your favorite hole at Silvertip and why?
Nothing jumps out as a favorite. The course is set in one of the most beautiful places in the world and everywhere is jaw dropping.
5. What makes Silvertip Golf Resort so unique?
The course is located in the Montane Region of the Rocky Mountains on the side of Mount Lady McDonald. One of the most beautiful places in the world. We have 600 feet of elevation change and 12km of cart path. Silvertip is the only course in the area with bent grass tees. The golf course is consistently in immaculate shape while being very playable. This makes for enjoyment to be had by all.
6. What three players would join you in your “dream foursome” and why?
Bill Murray. I think that speaks for itself. Jarome Iginla. I am Canadian, we love hockey and Jerome is my favorite player. Jason Day would round out the group. I just like his style and would enjoy the round.
